A Gift for a Coffee Lover

Received this wonderful gift on Monday- a CBTL Kaldi. The perfect gift for a coffee lover (read caffeine addict).

I always wondered how the CBTL coffee machine compares with the Nepresso machine. Jaffrey the Barack at the-vu (Internet magazine) made an interesting Comparison: CBTL, Nespresso, Single-Serve Espresso as in the table below

and came to some interesting conclusion. Read more

From the Espresso/Caffitaly Coffee Guide
Espresso is the most popular coffee drink in the world. It has its origin in Italy back in the year 1884. Nowadays, Espresso is a concentrated beverage brewed by forcing a small amount (30 ml) of almost boiling water (94 Celsius) under a high pressure of 9 bars through finely ground 8mg of coffee beans. Espresso often has a higher concentration of suspended and dissolved solids and foam and all flavours and chemicals in a small espresso cup are very concentrated. Espresso is the base for almost all other coffee drinks, such as a latte, macchiato, mocha, cappuccino or even American coffee. Typical espresso has about 40 to 75 mg of caffeine.

Expresso/Caffitaly Coffee Guide is an interesting blog documenting the different types of expresso capsules for the Caffitaly/CBTL coffee maker.

Evidence-Based Coffee Drinking?

1 cup . . . may lower your risk of cancer. A 13-year Japanese study revealed that men and women who drank a cup or more a day were half as likely to develop cancer of the mouth, pharynx, and esophagus compared with people who didn't drink coffee.

2 cups . . . may fend off strokes. In a 24-year study, women who drank 2-3 cups a day were 19 percent less likely to have a stroke compared with women who drank less than a cup a month. One caveat: The benefit applied only to nonsmoking women with no history of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes.

3 cups . . . may safeguard your neurons. Middle-aged adults who reported drinking at least 3 cups of coffee a day were 65 percent less likely to have developed dementia or Alzheimer's by the time most of the group had reached their mid-sixties to seventies. Now, that's a lotta coffee. But not for everyone.

What's in Those Magic Beans?

Although it's not clear how coffee does all of these wonderful, protective things, researchers suspect that the coffee bean's high level of inflammation-fighting antioxidants (called polyphenols) may have something to do with it. But is instant coffee as healthful as brewed?

Is Brewed Coffee Healthier than Instant Coffee?

Answers from

YOU Docs Daily

Although instant java is highly processed, the caffeine and some of the healthy polyphenols found in brewed coffee are preserved because instant starts its life as brewed coffee. Really, instant is just brewed coffee that’s either been freeze- or spray-dried until the liquid is gone. But some of the polyphenols and the taste go, too; how much depends on which beans, what brewing process, and which drying method are used.

However, there’s a healthy twist to this story: Although brewed-coffee drinkers curl their lips at instant, the instant crowd is actually getting two-thirds more fiber than filtered-coffee drinkers are. Believe it or not, a 12-ounce cup of instant contains about 3 grams of fiber, compared to about 1.8 grams in the same amount of brewed. Bonus: The fiber helps your body absorb those polyphenols (plant substances that help your body help itself). So if you prefer instant, drink up, and laugh off the coffee snobs. They don’t know what they’re missing.

A Coffee Blend to for the Watchmen

from All Things Coffee-Coffeerama.com

Watchmen Coffee (Nite Owl Dark Roast)

(picture from Amazon.com)

In case you're a grown-up and a Watchmen lunchbox doesn't appeal to you, you might consider getting a can of Watchmen coffee. I doubt that that any movie theater will allow you to bring in a coffee maker or a travel mug into the theater so you can sip on your tasty Nite Owl Dark Roast while you watch the movie, so you you'll probably have to stick with drinking it at home only (until you get the DVD).

According to Amazon, this is the "World's First Movie Tie-in Coffee," which seems unlikely, but I can't confirm or deny this. A couple of other snippets from Amazon: It's organic fair trade, 51% of the profits go to charity and there's a limited number of these comic book coffee cans produced (I heard somewhere that they only made 10,000).

cool, I gonna get a can

A Coffee Joke

A man and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the coffee each morning.
The wife said, 'You should do it, because you get up first, and then we don't have to wait as long to get our coffee.'
The husband said, ' You are in charge of cooking around here and you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee.'
Wife replies, 'No, you should do it, and besides, it is in the Bible that the man should do the coffee.'
Husband replies, 'I can't believe that, show me.'

So she fetched the Bible, and opened the New Testament
and showed him at the top of several pages, that it indeed says..........'HEBREWS'
